In his book The Heirloom Garden, Wade Rouse writes;  "My grandma had peonies whose blooms were as big as baseballs, and they would just flop over on the ground during the summer heat like her old dog used to do. She had a laundry line over her peonies, just so they would scent her sheets when she hung them out to dry.” I stop and shut my eyes. “When I would stay with her in the summer, my sheets smelled like peonies.
